It’s still really, really hot outside – we’ve not even had a TASTE of fall weather here in Missouri where I live, and yet… I’ve already set my sights on Halloween wistfully, as I seem to do each year when August just keeps punishing me with hot and muggy weather. My easily most successful pattern is my pumpkin amigurumi that I made and published on here a decade ago, and I’ve noticed that interest starts to pick back up for that pattern each year around this time, too. I guess I’m not the only one who’s longing for crisp & cool weather!

So to kick off how tired of summer I am, I’m starting in on fall and Halloween themed crochet projects – starting with these cute mini pumpkin/fruit pies! They work up quick and make a great key chain, but also look really cute set around the house 😍

YouTube Pattern Video

Below you’ll find the pattern video. I use YouTube’s “Chapters” feature to sort each individual instruction (rounds, sewing, sections, etc.) into a time stamped section. You should be able to see the chapters in the timeline/seek bar of the video below, but if you click over to YouTube, you’ll be able to pull the chapters up and move more easily between them.

As always, with the pattern write-up here on my blog, the written instructions are “bare bones” – they’re designed to work hand-in-hand with the video tutorial, so there aren’t a lot of images or descriptive language. If you’re having any issues, please refer to the video! I work hard to make them as clear as possible.

Concepts

I would grade this pattern as an advanced beginner pattern because it:

1. Uses all basic amigurumi techniques (starting a magic ring, single crocheting, increases & decreases) – You should be comfortable doing these before beginning this tutorial for the best success!
2. Has a little back and forth straight stitch sewing
3. Uses FLO, BLO, and chaining
4. Fastening on to pre-established work

However, as with all of my tutorials, I’ll guide you through each step to the best of my ability. Don’t be afraid to give it a try, as I try to do a pretty good job going slow to help you master new concepts. 😍

Materials

• Worsted weight yarn in your crust and filling color, or your choice of weight and color – just remember to size hooks and accessories accordingly. You can use scraps of yarn for this project, as it is very small and barely takes any yarn at all!
• 4mm crochet hook (or whatever size you need, based on the weight of yarn you choose)
• Your standard amigurumi items: tapestry/yarn needle(s), stitch marker, scissors, and stuffing.
• Optional: a small scrap of cardboard to keep the bottom of the pie’s crust flat.
• Optional: key chain attachment, to make your pie into a key chain!

Pattern Notes

All of my patterns are written with US terminology. 

As with most amigurumi projects, your work will be formed by crocheting in a continuous spiral, with a stitch marker marking the beginning of each round. Any other construction style will be indicated in the pattern!

Abbreviations

These are my most commonly used abbreviations. Any special stitches or exceptions will be denoted in the pattern as they appear!

Pattern

Crust

Work with taupe/brown colored yarn!

Rnd 1: 6 MR

Rnd 2: *inc* x 6 (12)

Rnd 3: *1 sc, inc* x 6 (18)

Rnd 4: *2 sc, inc* x 6 (24)

Rnd 5: *3 sc, inc* x 6 (30)

Rnd 6: in BLO, slp st around

Rnd 7: in BLO, sc around

Rnd 8: in FLO, *slp st, ch 1* around, ending with 1 slp st

Fasten off, leaving a very long tail – we’ll use this to add the latticework detail to the top of the pie. I like to leave at least 24 inches of excess tail – I hate running out.

Filling

Work with whatever color yarn your pie filling is going to be – red for cherry, blue for blueberry, etc. – I’m using orange for a pumpkin pie!

Fasten on to any BLO left from Rnd 7 of the crust.

Rnd 1: in BLO, slp st around (30)

Rnd 2: in BLO,  *3 sc, dec* x 6 (24)

If adding cardboard circle to bottom of pie, insert it now.

Rnd 3: *2 sc, dec* x 6 (18)

Rnd 4: *1 sc, dec* x 6 (12)

Add a little stuffing here, sending plenty to the outer rounds of the crust.

Rnd 5: *dec* x 6 (6)

Fasten off by slp st to next st. Cut a tail and pull through the last loop on your hook. Use this tail to sew through each of the 6 FLO remaining – pull tight to cinch closed, then tie a knot and weave in tail.

Latticework Detail

Using remaining tail from crust, sew 5-6 long straight stitches across the top of the pie. Rotate, then sew another 5-6 long straight stitches across the stitches you just sewed, in a grid/waffle shaped pattern.  This is a great place to watch the video tutorial!

Once sewn, send remaining tail to somewhere on the crust, tie a knot, and weave in.

If adding keychain attachment, add here – I like to add mine to the side of the pie, so the front of the pie is visible!

Complete!
