Hi all – at the request of a few folks on YouTube, here’s the write up of an older (but very popular) pattern – this fruit draw string pouch! I need to revisit more of my older patterns and get them added to the blog – and vice versa, I have a few good ones posted on here that really ought to get a YouTube tutorial video. •ᴗ•

YouTube Pattern Video
Below you’ll find the pattern video. I use YouTube’s “Chapters” feature to sort each individual instruction (rounds, sewing, sections, etc.) into a time stamped section. You should be able to see the chapters in the timeline/seek bar of the video below, but if you click over to YouTube, you’ll be able to pull the chapters up and move more easily between them.
As always, with the pattern write-up here on my blog, the written instructions are “bare bones” – they’re designed to work hand-in-hand with the video tutorial, so there aren’t a lot of images or descriptive language. If you’re having any issues, please refer to the video! I work hard to make them as clear as possible.
If the video still doesn’t answer your questions, drop me a comment here on the blog or over on the video on YouTube, and I’ll see if I can help you out. 👍
Concepts
I would grade this pattern as an advanced beginner pattern because:
- Uses all basic amigurumi techniques (starting a magic ring, single crocheting, increases & decreases) – You should be comfortable doing these before beginning this tutorial for the best success!
- The draw string is created by chaining, and then working slip, single, half double, and double crochet stitches. You should be able to make these stitches before starting this pattern!
- The draw string is… a little unusual in construction. It’s not hard, just weird! But I feel I do a good job showing you in the tutorial exactly how to work each part.
However, as with all of my tutorials, I’ll guide you through each step to the best of my ability. Don’t be afraid to give it a try, as I try to do a pretty good job going slow to help you master new concepts. 😍
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in main color (yellow for me) and secondary color (green for me), or your choice of weight and color – just remember to size hooks and accessories accordingly.
- 5mm hook for the bag and 4mm hook for the draw string (or whatever size you need, based on the weight of yarn you choose)
- Your standard amigurumi items: tapestry/yarn needle(s), stitch marker, scissors – no stuffing for this one!
Pattern Notes
All of my patterns are written with US terminology.
As with most amigurumi projects, your work will be formed by crocheting in a continuous spiral, with a stitch marker marking the beginning of each round. Any other construction style will be indicated in the pattern!
Abbreviations
These are my most commonly used abbreviations. Any special stitches or exceptions will be denoted in the pattern as they appear!
| rnd(s) | round(s) |
| sc | single crochet |
| MR/ML | magic ring/magic loop |
| ( ) | number of stitches at the end of each round |
| * * | repeat instructions between in the order they appear, the indicated amount of times |
| inc | increase (typically single crochet – otherwise denoted) |
| dec | decrease (typically single crochet – otherwise denoted) |
| BLO | work in the back loop only |
| FLO | work in the front loop only |
| slp st | slip stitch |
| dc | double crochet |
| hdc | half double crochet |
| ch | chain |
| st(s) | stitch(es) |
| YO | yarn over |
| [ ] | special instructions |
| sk | skip |

Fruit Pouch
With larger hook (5mm for me) and main color yarn (yellow for me), form MR/ML
| Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR/ML (6) |
| Rnd 2: *inc* x 6 (12) |
| Rnd 3: *1 sc, inc* x 6 (18) |
| Rnd 4: *2 sc, inc* x 6 (24) |
| Rnd 5: *3 sc, inc* x 6 (30) |
| Rnd 6: *4 sc, inc* x 6 (36) |
| Rnd 7: *5 sc, inc* x 6 (42) |
| Rnd 8: *6 sc, inc* x 6 (48) |
| Rnds 9-18: 1 sc in each st around [10 rnds sc total!] |
| Rnd 19: *6 sc, dec* x 6 (42) |
| Rnd 20: *5 sc, dec* x 6 (36) |
| Rnd 21: *4 sc, dec* x 6 (30) |
| Rnd 22: *3 sc, dec* x 6 (24) |
| Rnd 23: *2 sc, dec* x 6 (18) |
| Rnd 24: *1 sc in next st, ch 2* repeat around (18 sc sts, 18 ch 2 sps) |
| Rnd 25: in each ch 2 sp, place 2 sc sts (36 sc sts total) |
Fasten off by slp st to 1st sc of Rnd 25, then cut a tail and weave in. Set fruit pouch aside – we’ll be back once we have the draw string crocheted to get it assembled.
Draw String
Highly recommend watching the video here!
With smaller hook (4mm for me) and secondary color (green for me!), tie a slip knot and chain 6 sts.
Leaf: We’ll start by crocheting the first leaf – begin by placing a slp st in the 2nd ch from your hook, then in the next ch a sc. In the next ch, place 1 hdc, then in the next ch place 1 hdc + 1 dc. In the last ch (the slip knot you tied to start the chain!), place 5 dc sts – swing the chain around so you’re working back up the other side.
On the opposite side of the chain, in the next ch st on this side of the ch, place 1 dc + 1 hdc, then 1 hdc, then 1 sc, then 1 slp st (mirrors the other side of the leaf).
Close off the top of the leaf by sc through the opposite side’s slp st, then rotate the leaf and add 1 slp st down the center (in the foundation chain) until you reach the 3rd dc we made along the bottom of the leaf. Slp st through the middle of that dc (in the post of the stitch) and then in the top of the stitch. Leaf complete!
Next, ch 32 sts – or more, if you want a longer drawstring. 32 worked perfectly for me!
Then, ch 6 additional sts – then repeat the Leaf section above to form the second leaf!
Once you’ve slp st down the center of the 2nd leaf, check that your chain hasn’t twisted – then continue adding 1 slp st to each ch, until you reach the 1st leaf! Cut a tail and weave it in to the 1st leaf.
Then, weave the drawstring through the ch 2 sps of the fruit pouch – I start by leaving one leaf on the outside, and folding the other and snaking it in and out of each ch 2 sp. Again, another good spot to watch the video!
Complete!
As always, thanks for tuning in. If you haven’t already checked out my YouTube page, I’d be forever grateful if you’d consider subscribing or watching my other tutorial videos. I try to post twice a month with a new tutorial!
Normal, obligatory legal banter:
Please, if you’d like to share this pattern, link folks directly to this blog page, or to the video on YouTube. I work really hard on my patterns and post them for free – please don’t copy my stuff and sell it as your own pattern! You can make and sell items made from this pattern – and while I would love a mention on the listing or a link back to my blog, it’s not a requirement.
