Crochet a Halloween Ghostie Pop – candy sucker topper crochet pattern + video tutorial

If you’ve been following the blog for awhile, you may have noticed there’s typically a surge of crochet patterns that appear around Halloween… It’s my favorite holiday, and it really inspires me to create. One of the things that I’ve had kicking around in my brain for a bit was the idea to make a candy sucker topper – so I could hand out candy for Halloween, but make it even cuter (and sort of dress up a Tootsie Pop a bit more, since they’re a little lack-luster as a stand-alone candy). So I created this Ghostie Pop as a way to make giving out a sucker to friends for Halloween more impactful and festive.

YouTube Pattern Video

Below you’ll find the pattern video. I use YouTube’s β€œChapters” feature to sort each individual instruction (rounds, sewing, sections, etc.) into a time stamped section. You should be able to see the chapters in the timeline/seek bar of the video below, but if you click over to YouTube, you’ll be able to pull the chapters up and move more easily between them.

As always, with the pattern write-up here on my blog, the written instructions are β€œbare bones” – they’re designed to work hand-in-hand with the video tutorial, so there aren’t a lot of images or descriptive language. If you’re having any issues, please refer to the video! I work hard to make them as clear as possible.

If the video still doesn’t answer your questions, drop me a comment here on the blog or over on the video on YouTube, and I’ll see if I can help you out. πŸ‘

Concepts

Here are all of the various concepts used in this pattern. Based on the combination of all the concepts listed, I’d grade this pattern as an advanced beginner pattern. You’ll want to be comfortable with:

  • Forming a magic ring and working inside one
  • Making sc, dc, inc, and slp sts
  • Basic joined rounds

However, as with all of my tutorials, I’ll guide you through each step to the best of my ability. Don’t be afraid to give it a try, as I try to do a pretty good job going slow to help you master new concepts. 😍

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in main color (white), accent color (orange), and optional hat color (charcoal). You can use whatever colors you’d like, the colors listed above are what I’m using for my ghostie pop! The ghostie looks cute with or without a hat.
    • You won’t need much yarn. I used scraps of all three colorsΒ  – no more than 10g for the white and charcoal, and just a small amount for the tie accent color.
  • 5mm crochet hook
  • 1 Tootsie Pop or similar sized sucker
  • 1 pair 8-9mm safety eyes
  • A yarn needle, stitch marker, and scissors
  • Optional: Doll accessory broom (I got a pack of 3 at my local craft store for $2 – it’s Hobby Lobby’s “Mayberry Street Miniatures”)
  • Optional: If making the witch hat, I use a little stuffing and then some hot glue to attach – but you can also sew the hat on!

Pattern Notes

All of my patterns are written with US terminology.

As with most amigurumi projects, your work will be formed by crocheting in a continuous spiral, with a stitch marker marking the beginning of each round. Any other construction style will be indicated in the pattern!

These are my most commonly used abbreviations. Any special stitches or exceptions will be denoted in the pattern as they appear!

Pattern

Ghostie Pop Body

Work with white colored yarn (or main color – your ghost can be whatever color you’d like!)

MR  6 sc

Rnd 1: *inc* x 6 (12)

Rnd 2: *1 sc, inc* x 6 (18)

Rnd 3: sc in each st around [1 rnd sc total]

Rnd 4: *2 sc, inc* x 6 (24)

Rnds 5-8: sc in each st around [4 rnds sc total]

Place safety eyes here, in between Rnds 6 & 7, and approximately 1 st apart.

Rnd 9: *1 sc, ch 1, sk 1 st* x 11, sc, ch1, sk last st in rnd & slp st to 1st sc of rnd (12 sc, 12 ch 1 sps) – starting joined rounds here.

Rnd 10: ch 3 sts, *2 dc in ch 1 sp, sk sc from Rnd 9* x 11, 1 dc in last ch 1 sp, slp st to top of ch 3 (24 sts, including ch 3 as 1st dc st!)

Rnds 11-12: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc st!), 1 dc in each st around, slp st to top of ch 3 to close (24)

Fasten off, leaving a medium tail. Weave this tail in and trim any remainder.

Bowtie Cinch

With accent color yarn, trim a short length and weave through the bottoms of the sc sts and gaps of the ch 1 sps made in Rnd 9 – this is a good place to watch the video, to see exactly what I mean!

Add your Tootsie Pop sucker now, then pull the accent color yarn tight to cinch the ghost around the sucker. Tie a little bow to secure, then trim any excess.

Mini Witch Hat – Optional Customization Choice

Work with hat colored yarn – I’m using charcoal colored yarn, but purple looks cute, too!

MR 3 sc

Rnd 1: *inc* x 3 (6)

Rnd 2: *1 sc, inc* x 3 (9)

Rnd 3: sc in each st around [1 rnd sc total]

Rnd 4: *2 sc, inc* x 3 (12)

Rnds 5-6: sc in each st around [2 rnds sc total]

Rnd 7: working in FLO, *1 sc, inc* x 6 (18)

Rnd 8: no longer in FLO, *2 sc, inc* x 6 (24)

Rnd 9: *3 sc, inc* x 6 (30)

Fasten off by slp st to 1st sc of Rnd 9. Cut a long tail, and weave the tail up to where the brim meets the cone of the hat. Add a little stuffing to the cone, then use the tail to sew the hat on (I find it’s easier to sew the hat on when the sucker is in place, but you may find it easier to take the sucker out. See what works best for you!).

Alternatively, you can weave this tail in and use a little hot glue to attach the hat!

Complete!

As always, thanks for tuning in. If you haven’t already checked out my YouTube page, I’d be forever grateful if you’d consider subscribing or watching my other tutorial videos. I try to post twice a month with a new tutorial!

Normal, obligatory legal banter:

Please, if you’d like to share this pattern, link folks directly to this blog page, or to the video on YouTube. I work really hard on my patterns and post them for free – please don’t copy my stuff and sell it as your own pattern! You can make and sell items made from this pattern – and while I would love a mention on the listing or a link back to my blog, it’s not a requirement.
