Time for another festive (and not-so-spooky cryptid) Buddy! I’ve had him sitting on my shelf in my office, staring at me for the last week or so, to remind me to type up his pattern and film his tutorial to share with everyone. Sometimes called the “Abominable Snowman,” this holiday cryptid is seriously the antithesis of abominable. Just look at that face:
The head uses a new (to me!) color changing technique that I recently learned about for another project I was working on. It uses FLO sc during the color change sections, and a long float in each color. Once you get the hang of it, it’s really easy and makes a nice, non-skewed color block on your project! If you’re unfamiliar with color working, I’d recommend giving the accompanying video a look-see on the sections of the head that use this new color working technique.
YouTube Pattern Video
Below youâll find the pattern video. I use YouTubeâs âChaptersâ feature to sort each individual instruction (rounds, sewing, sections, etc.) into a time stamped section. You should be able to see the chapters in the timeline/seek bar of the video below, but if you click over to YouTube, you’ll be able to pull the chapters up and move more easily between them.
As always, with the pattern write-up here on my blog, the written instructions are âbare bonesâ â theyâre designed to work hand-in-hand with the video tutorial, so there arenât a lot of images or descriptive language. If youâre having any issues, please refer to the video! I work hard to make them as clear as possible.
If the video still doesnât answer your questions, drop me a comment here on the blog or over on the video on YouTube, and Iâll see if I can help you out. âĪ

Pattern Notes
All of my patterns are written with US terminology.
As with most amigurumi projects, your work will be formed by crocheting in a continuous spiral, with a stitch marker marking the beginning of each round. Any other construction style will be indicated in the pattern!
Abbreviations
These are my most commonly used abbreviations. Any special stitches or exceptions will be denoted in the pattern as they appear!
| rnd(s) | round(s) |
| sc | single crochet |
| MR | magic ring |
| ( ) | number of stitches at the end of each round |
| * * | repeat instructions, in the order they appear, the indicated amount of times |
| inc | increase (typically single crochet – otherwise denoted) |
| BLO | work in the back loop only |
| FLO | work in the front loop only |
| slp st | slip stitch |
| dc | double crochet |
| hdc | half double crochet |
| ch | chain |
| st(s) | stitch(es) |
Pattern
Head
Starting with white yarn, form a MR.
Rnd 1: 7 sc in MR (7)
Rnd 2: *inc* x 7 (14)
Rnd 3: *1 sc, inc* x 7 (21)
Rnd 4: 21 sc
Rnd 5: *2 sc, inc* x 7 (28)
Rnd 6: *3 sc, inc* x 7 (35)
Starting in Rnd 7, we’ll be working in the FLO. This helps with our color work! For a better understanding of this color work technique, I highly recommend giving the video a watch.
Rnd 7: working in FLO, 16 white sc, 5 blue sc, 14 sc white
Rnd 8: *4 sc, inc* x 2, 4 sc white, 1 inc, 4 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc in blue, 1 sc, inc, *4sc, inc* x 2 in white (42)
Rnd 9-13: 16 sc white, 11 sc blue, 15 sc white
Rnd 14: 18 sc white, 7 sc blue, fasten off blue, 17 sc white
We can go back to working in the front and back loops at this point, as we’re done with our color work!
Rnd 15: *4 sc, FLO dec* x 7 (35)
Rnd 16: * 3 sc, FLO dec* x 7 (28)
Rnd 17: *2 sc, FLO dec* x 7 (21)
Rnd 18: 3 FLO dec, leave rest of round unworked (18)
Fasten off by slip stitching to the next stitch, then reserve a long tail for sewing.
Place safety eyes so they’re centered in the blue panel we worked and in between Rnds 10 & 11, approximately 5 sts apart.
Stuff head, focusing stuffing into the sides and emphasizing the semi-oblong shape of head (think potato, not ball).
Then, take a little blue yarn and sew two straight stitches between the eyes. Then, wrap the yarn around and around to make the nose. (This is a great place to check out the video!)
Then, using black embroidery floss, add smile over Rnd 12 and below the eyes. Add eyebrows above eyes in approximately Rnd 9.
Use a little white yarn to embroider the teeth on the smile next.
Cheeks
Make 2! In pink, form a MR.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Fasten off by slip stitching to first stitch. Then, cut a long tail to sew with. Yarn over, and pull tail through last slip stitch.
You can either sew the cheeks on with back stitch (which hides your stitches!) or opt to glue them on. Either works fine! Attach them to the outside of each eye, over Rnds 12-14. If youâre sewing, weave in all ends.
Ruff
With white faux fur, attach to one of the FLO on the last round of the head. Add 1 sc in each FLO around the head, then fasten off and weave in tails.
Horns
Make 2! With blue yarn, form a MR.
Rnd 1: 3 sc in MR
Rnd 2: *inc* x 3 (6)
Rnd 3: inc, 5 sc (7)
Rnd 4: inc, 6 sc (8)
Fasten off by slip stitching to the next stitch, leaving a long tail for sewing. Attach to the head, approximately on Rnd 4. I’d recommend back stitching them on, so your stitches stay hidden, or sewing up through the inside of the head.
Body
In white, form a MR.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Rnd 2: *inc* x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: *1 sc, inc* x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: *2 sc, inc* x 6 (24)
Rnd 5: *3 sc, inc* x 6 (30)
Rnd 6: * 4 sc, inc* x 6 (36)
Rnd 7: in BLO, 36 sc
Rnd 8-13: 36 sc [6 rnds sc total!]
Rnd 14: *4 sc, FLO dec* x 6 (30)
Rnd 15: 30 sc
Rnd 16: *3 sc, FLO dec* x 6 (24)
Rnd 17: *2 sc, FLO dec* x 6 (18)
Fasten off by slip stitching to the next stitch of the round. Cut a short tail, and stuff it inside the body.
Stuff the inside of the body here. Then, locate the âjogâ from the BLO sts of Rnd 7. This needs to be in the back, so make sure the face isnât on the same side as this jog!
Next, use tail from the head to sew the head and body together. Sew through one stitch of Rnd 17 of the body and a BLO stitch from Rnd 18 of the head (remember, we attached the ruff to the FLO) â they should line up 1 to 1, since we have 18 sts in each last round. Pull tight on each stitch, cinching the head and body together to form the neck. You may need to add a little extra fluff as you sew.
Once sewn, tie a knot to secure and weave the tail in.
Now’s a good time to loosen the faux fur ruff, too – I roll it between my thumb and index finger to loosen the fur out of the single crochet stitches that we made. You can also use a slicker brush (like you’d use on a cat or dog!) and brush the ruff to help fluff it up a bit.
Arms
Make 2! In blue yarn, form a MR. If you’re working with a smaller weight yarn than worsted weight, I’d recommend stuffing this piece as you work – I wait until the end to stuff.
Rnd 1: 8 sc in MR (8)
Rnds 2-5: 8 sc [4 rnds sc total!]
Switch color to white. Fasten off light blue and weave in tail as you work.
Rnds 6-13: 8 sc around [8 rnds sc total!]
Stuff arm, then fold in half. Sc across the top of the arm, working through both layers, to close the arm off. Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew with.
Once you’ve made both arms, they attach just under the ruff and to either side of the body. Use the tail to whip stitch the arms on, being careful not to snag any of the ruff.
Tie a surface knot/french knot to secure each arm, then weave the tail in and trim.
Feet
Make 2! With blue yarn, form a MR.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Rnd 2: *inc* x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: *1 sc, inc* x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: 4 sc, *5 dc bobble in next stitch, 1 sc* x 3, 8 sc (18)
5 dc bobble stitch: *YO, then insert hook into stitch. YO, then draw through 1 loop on hook. YO, and draw through 2 loops on hook* x 5, always reinserting hook into same stitch. Then, YO, and draw through all 6 loops on hook. Then, ch 1 tight stitch and push the bobble to the surface of your work. Note: This chain 1 needs to be skipped over in the next round, as it doesn’t count towards your stitch count. I either chain really tightly and skip the stitch entirely, OR decrease it together with the stitch directly before.
Switch to white, and fasten off blue. Work tail in as you continue working.
Rnd 5-7: 18 sc [3 rnds sc total!]
Fasten off by slip stitching to the next stitch and cutting a long tail for sewing. Stuff each foot, then attach them to the front of the body so that the bottom of the Rnd 8 sits along the FLO left behind on the body, and the inside of each foot is in line with the inside corner of each eye. They’re closer set than the arms, but angle outward – and the toes (bobble stitches!) point UPWARDS.
Use the tail from each foot to whip stitch them on. I catch the FLO sts along the bottom when whip stitching on.
Complete!
As always, thanks for tuning in. If you havenât already checked out my YouTube page, Iâd be forever grateful if youâd consider subscribing or watching my other tutorial videos. I try to post twice a month with a new tutorial!
Normal, obligatory legal banter:
Please, if youâd like to share this pattern, link folks directly to this blog page, or to the video on YouTube. I work really hard on my patterns and post them for free – please donât copy my stuff and sell it as your own pattern! You can make and sell items made from this pattern – and while I would love a mention on the listing or a link back to my blog, itâs not a requirement.
