Ice Cream Bear!

In an attempt to both blog more regularly, and also to design more patterns, I’ve written up this pint-sized bear amigurumi plush! I’ve already made three of these cute little bears; they work up quickly, they are VERY cute, and they fit in the palm of your hand!

Materials you’ll need:

1. 5mm crochet hook*
2. 9mm safety eyes*
3. polyfil stuffing
4. worsted weight yarn*
5. black embroidery floss
6. tapestry needle & scissors
7. blush (optional)

*If you want to make an even smaller bear, I suggest dropping down to a size 3.5mm or 4mm crochet hook, using sport weight yarn, and 6mm safety eyes.

Head:

With main body color, chain 2.

Row 1: 6sc in each stitch.

Row 2: increase in each stitch (12)

Row 3: *1sc, increase* (18)

Row 4: *2sc, increase* (24)

Row 5 – 8: sc around, total of 4 rows.

Row 9: *2sc, decrease* (18)

Row 10: *1sc, decrease* (12)

Row 11: decrease in all stitches (6)

Fasten off, and leave a long tail for when we attach the body to the head! We won’t close the bottom of the work, either.

Now we’ll add the face details!

First, insert the safety eyes on the head – they’ll go in between rounds 6 & 7, and are 6 stitches apart. Then, stuff the head – it should be a flattened sphere, so don’t stuff it so much that it rounds out. Then, embroider the nose on by making two or three long stitches in between the eyes, and then two stitches that slant (one to the right, one to the left of the face) below the nose, like the top of a triangle.

If desired, apply a little blush below each eye!

Frosting:

In frosting color, ch 2.

Row 1: 6sc in first chain

Row 2: increase in each stitch (12)

Row 3: *1sc, increase* (18)

Row 4: *ch 3, then sc in the second and third stitches of the chain; sc in the next 2 stitches* 8 times. On the 8th time, the very last stitch will be a slip stitch instead of a sc.

Fasten off by cutting a long tail and pulling the yarn straight through the slip stitch.

Cone:

In cone color, ch. 2.

Row 1: 6sc in first ch.

Row 2: sc in each stitch (6)

Row 3: *sc, increase* (9)

Row 4: sc in each stitch (9)

Slip stitch to next stitch. Fasten off by cutting a long tail and pulling the yarn straight through the slip stitch.

PRO TIP: If you find your cone isn’t as pointy as you would like, pull on the tail from your slip knot. I also find it really helpful to pinch the tip of the cone with my fingers and gently tug on it, to elongate it a bit.

Ear:

In body color, make a Magic Circle and put 6sc stitches in it. Make sure to work in the tail from the Magic Circle as you make the 6sc!

Slip stitch to the first sc you made. Fasten off by cutting a long tail and pulling the yarn straight through the slip stitch.

Head Assembly:

First, let’s sew on the frosting!

Position the frosting so it sits off to the right side of the head, like in the pictures above! Using the tail from the frosting, carefully stitch down each “swoop” of icing. Once all the way around, tie a knot and weave in the tail end.

Now attach the cone to the frosting – again, the cone sits off to the right side, and acts as the bear’s other ear! Carefully sew the cone to the frosting – try to make your stitches small, so they aren’t super obvious against the color of the frosting.

Using the tail from the ear, sew it off to the left, and in line with the cone.

Body:

In body color, ch. 2.

Row 1: 6sc in first ch.

Row 2: increase in each stitch (12)

Row 3: *1sc, increase* (18)

Row 4 -7: sc around, total of 4 rows.

Row 8: *1sc, decrease* (12)

Row 9: sc around

Row 10: decrease in all stitches (6)

Fasten off, leaving long tail. Stuff body, then sew through each stitch with the tail. Pull tightly to close, tie a knot, and weave in tail. Set aside.

Arms (make 2!):

In body color, ch. 2.

Row 1: 6sc in first ch.

Row 2 – 3: sc around

Fasten off, leaving long tail. With tail, sew through each remaining stitch and pull tight to close. Tie a knot, and set the arms aside.

Feet (make 2!):

Row 1: 6sc in first ch.

Row 2: sc around

Fasten off, leaving long tail. Flatten out the front of the foot (Row 1) with your fingers, making each foot sort of like a cup.

Ok, time for the feet details! Using some black embroidery thread, sew three long stitches on the front of the foot (Row 1). Then, make the three “dots” by tying knots on the surface of your work (French Knot) and sending the thread back down into the foot behind the knot you just created. Here’s a guide picture:

Assembly:

Attach the head to the end of the body where you fastened off (the slightly tapered end of the body) sewing them together with the tail left over from the head. Weave in tail once head is attached.

Attach arms to either side of the body with the leftover tail from each. Attach feet to front of the body using leftover tails from each.

Done!
